These notions can imbed themselves in others if your use is not monitored. If multiple people within a family or household suffer from addiction, it becomes imperative that all members decide to pursue recovery to create the best possibility for sustained success.

For some, this can mean that each individual will begin a separate recovery program that focuses internally, while others may want to pursue this sober challenge as a couple.

Many recovery programs structure around ideas of accountability and responsibility while incorporating other grounding strategies, recovery techniques, and processes.

Couples can also utilize their partner in their recovery as an additional resource. Having a caring loved one alongside you throughout the process can eliminate many stresses that come with the recovery process. As couples learn about the disease together and how it has affected their lives, couples can better understand each other, clearing any misconceptions or assumptions in communication while helping to create an air of understanding as both people navigate their complex physical and emotional changes.

Likewise, having your partner navigate the recovery process by your side can be a phenomenal resource for accountability. Having your partner just as intimately invested in your sobriety can also contextualize the importance of each sober milestone. Reaching your first entire week sober is a significant accomplishment, and it can be challenging to understand precisely how impossible such a goal may seem at first for those who have not lived through the trials of the disease themselves.

This genuine understanding of your accomplishments can empower each individual to celebrate their hard-earned successes and revel in progress made.

Your partner can also learn to celebrate in sober-appropriate ways, understanding the dangers and benefits of sober celebrations throughout the ongoing process.

A vicious cycle begins as the tension resulting from the addiction creates a dynamic that is continuously triggering for both partners, and making it more difficult for the substance-abusing partner to stop, while the other feels more and more hurt and neglected.

Substance use or other addictions are a band aid and a way to self-medicate when your most important needs for connection are neglected. We want to help you get your needs met in your relationship.

We want to help you learn to communicate in ways that feel loving, secure and soothing. Supportive relationships can look like anything: partners, friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. We are focusing on couples here because that is often the closest or most intimate relationship—which makes it incredibly valuable as a supportive space.

Having a partner you feel comfortable being open, honest, and vulnerable with gives you the opportunity to open that communication and ask for what you need from them.

It gives you a space to seek help without shame, as well as gives you someone to celebrate your accomplishments with. In couples addiction counseling, our couples counselors will help you and your partner open those lines of communication.

Therapy can help couples learn to engage on a level that fosters connection and security rather than hostility, escalation and detachment. A new positive cycle can be created in couples counseling to bring closeness, support sobriety, and heal.

Our relationships greatly facilitate the recovery process. An addicted person is often better able to sustain recovery when there is a sense of connection, love and trust in their most important relationships.

For example, surrounding yourself with friends who constantly drink or partake in dangerous or illicit drug use increases your chances of using and developing SUD. Similarly, romantic involvement with someone who drinks or uses drugs excessively may lead you to addiction.

Perhaps substance use is the common factor between you two and is central to your relationship. According to the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment , behavioral couples therapy BCT is "designed for married or cohabiting individuals seeking help for alcoholism or drug abuse" and aims "to build support for abstinence and to improve relationship functioning.

Combined with other recovery modalities, BCT can effectively treat couples seeking recovery together. However, seeking recovery together does not negate the importance of individual treatment.

Addiction treatment is most effective when individualized. That means you may need a specific combination of treatments, techniques, or therapies. You and your partner may find that you need different combinations of interventions to be successful. The desire to seek recovery together is beautiful, but you might not take every step together.

Additionally, it could be detrimental to let your desire to seek recovery together prevent you from choosing the right treatment program for each of you. Deciding between a partial hospitalization program PHP , intensive outpatient program IOP , or outpatient program should be a decision you make for yourself based on the program you think is the right fit.

This might mean you each need to take different paths. There are, however, benefits to entering recovery together. The first benefit of entering recovery together is the way it can improve your relationship. Treatment is a time of self-discovery. In addition to learning coping skills to avoid substance use, you can work to improve communication and set goals for yourself.

Then, you can apply what you learn during treatment to your relationship. Next, BCT can improve your relationship. The first step in BCT is maintaining abstinence from substances and attending therapy regularly.

Once you do this, BCT can improve the dynamics between you and your partner.
